Lanai is one of the least populated and most pristine islands in Hawaii. With just 4000 residents, and only two resorts, the island is very new to tourism. As a result, many beaches are only accessible by dirt road and four wheel drive. Despite the lack of tourist infrastructure, the island is home to some of the state's best beaches, all of which are almost completely free of other people. For a true Old Hawaii surfing experience, give Lanai a go.
Lopa Beach, accessible only by four wheel drive, is considered the island's best surf beach. Although there are no surf shops on Lanai, it is possible to rent boards from Lanai Surf Shop. The beach is completely uncrowded, as tourism hasn't discovered this secluded and unique island quite yet. Shipwreck beach is a good swimming site, with moderate waves for beginner surfers.
