The Big Island, or Hawai'i, features some of Hawaii's best surf spots, coral bays, and remote bays. A worldwide centre of volcanic activity, the island is the largest in the state, and activity centres around the island's major city of Hilo, and the very tourist-friendly Kona Coast. While not renowned for its beaches, the island offers many exciting and untouched surf spots.
The Kona Kohala Coast is home to many of the island's best beaches, including the Hapuna Beach, located just 30km to the north of Kona. One of the most popular, and visually stunning beaches in the area, it features several lengthy breaks offering some of the most exciting surf spots for surfers of all levels of experience. Many hotels and tour operators in the area will be able to rent a surfboard. It's best to ask around to see which provider can provide the type of board you want.
